Where Do Stolen Catalytic Converters Go?

After the catalytic converter was stolen from my 2005 Honda Element, I decided to so some research on where these stolen catalytic converters end up. I learned some interesting things.
In addition to discussing where catalytic converters go after they are stolen, I also talk about why catalytic converters are being stolen in the first place. You might be surprised about how much they’re really worth.
Thanks for watching!

  • So, I had to pay a repair shop to replace my catalytic converter, a known issue for Chevy Equinox owners. (Amongst a million more, NEVER SIGN A LOAN FOR A CHEVROLET!) Should I have demanded my "failed" part and sold it to a salvage operation? As soon as I can, I'm going to trade my Chevy POS for a foreign car, and to hell with what it does to the country. Biden is doing more damage than good, and is escalating the erosion of American beliefs.

  • I think I saw this on the news here in Canada a few days ago...in the province of Alberta, legislation is being enacted to have anyone brining Cat Converters 🐈 to auto 🚘 recyclers, the recyclers must ask for all pertinent information about the seller. I think this is a huge step in the ✅ right direction.

  • All these anti pollution measures being implemented over the years all the way up to today, are only money making, moot point, feel good measures. Stop to think about this: How much coal and fuel are burned, in the total of all the mining, transportation, boxing, shipping, manufacturing and installation of these things? And that's not even covering the energy expended in recycling them. How about all the fuel burned in just the commuting of the people going to work just to make them? In the end, in total, has the environment really been spared anything? It's all transference. Much like the guy driving his electric car thinking he's helping the environment because there's no exhaust coming from his car. But does he even stop to think about the electric plant 200 miles away belching smoke into the air to make his non-polluting electricity? All these things also apply to this new diesel exhaust fluid, which involves the expenditure of tons of energy to create, box, and ship everywhere, leaving gas stations and truck stops littered with cardboard boxes and plastic jugs from the stuff, only to end up in landfills. Really, what's been saved? IMO, nothing. This catalytic thing goes even further, creating not only a black market for thieves to profit from, but a major cost to consumers and insurance companies to pay for the damage caused, and the replacement of these expensive "feelgood" commodities. Everything that came with this planet will remain here in one form or another, well, except for maybe some rocket fuel and space junk.

  • Last year, I was working on my old ‘04 accord for my girlfriend’s son. Previously, I had done work on her daughter’s ‘03 accord. Long story short, I had 2 OE cats to offload. I shopped around via email, finding a ton of ‘middlemen’ willing to come to me, or have me mail it to them (yeah, right!). I ended up finding a recycler 2 town away in NH that was a walk-in, show ID, walk out with cash within 5 minutes. Yeah, they are part of the problem. I was sure to bring them in the boxes the aftermarket units shipped in, and no, they weren’t cut off...one was rusted off, but that’s another story. 🤣 So long story short, yeah, they are far too easy to offload. Yeah, I showed ID, yeah I was on camera, but cash in hand (a shade under $600 in my case) instead of at least paying by check is a bad business practice.

  • I now appriciate how Ford puts the cats on a 4.6/5.4l V8. The downpipe from the exhaust manifold is the cat. its impossible to get a sawzall to the top of the cat from under the car. I had to take off the exhaust manifold entirely and then I used a chipping hammar to empty out the cats. I welded the back pipes back on after hollowing the cats, one was clogged and I couldnt afford a new one. I threw the old cat material in the trash! Man if I wasnt a dumb 18yr old kid at the time I would have taken that stuff to the recycler!

  • It has been this way for a long time with current car dealerships giving big money on "ANY" trade ins because they are scoping out the profit margin. Decades ago it was to acquire larger metals from the frame; replaced by the new car made of plastic and fiber glass. As technology ramps; the sell your older for "be cool, you gottat have it" newer (crap), with the least amount of effort to obtain with the profit to ounce ratio (same with coins - that's why a roman dime with hundreds of years of historical value I obtained for $7 about 5 years ago was too insignificant in weight for profit. The same algorithms are used for bit coin vs processor speed or even RAM to adjust the market price. I enjoyed seeing a well thought through video. They are rare these days.

  • They need to change the minerals in CC's with minerals that aren't being shorted. The technology is outdated and we need new CC technology. If anyone makes a replacement with new CC tech that makes them cheaper with the same or better emission technology we can fix this problem by installing these on all current vehicles. The alternative is to change gas to hydrogen which would eliminate the need for a CC since Hydrogen burns cleaner than gas and diesel. The other alternative is to install the CC next to the exhaust headers in the engine bay. This makes getting to the CC impossible. The other alternative would be to install a big metal cover plate under the car. Some supercars do this.

  • My 2004 Jeep Cherokee was hit recently, we have video with audio of the thieves at 10 am broad daylight stealing my converter but it was not possible to make out license plate...cops say they have to catch them in the act to prosecute for theft...F#@king ridiculous !!! I found listing for metal salvage operations around the U.S. and called one back east in Connecticut at night, they replied that same night by text and first asked what I was selling, then after I texted Rd Pt Pd , they asked if it was from Cat Conv's so I replied " why does the source matter (their own online ad said from any source) so they then replied "minimum 1000 lbs" Forget these morons who are too lazy to work for an honest living, the government needs to get their hands dirty and start cracking down on the buyers by monitoring their operations and putting some of them in prison for buying stolen metal...make them scrutinize the people who sell these rare metals, their source, require valid ID, and limit the amount any one person or business entity can sell during fixed time periods. If the neighborhood low lifes have no way to cash in on these thefts do you really think they will keep risking it with no immediate payoff ? They certainly are not going to be able to set up a processing operation of their own.
