Most people do not realize, this movie was in development hell for 15+ years. Zack was attached to direct in 2005, then he step aside to do other projects, then TWD came out flooding the market for zombies... WWZ showed zombie movies can still make bank, but yet no one wanted to spend $90 million on a zombie movie Funny thing, this movie has 3 times the budget of his DAWN remake. I have a feeling this movie came to netflix, after being at Universal and WB for years, because of the original ZS vs WB Josstice League fiasco. From what I read there was so much bad blood between ZS and WB he brought this script over to Netflix I kind of picture the meeting going something like this. ZS: Hey I have this script for a zombie movie I want to direct NF: (Hands over a blank check) TAKE OUR MONEY!!!
Zack Snyder has transcended from commercial and action film director to a brand movie fans get tingles about when they hear he has directed a movie they want to see. I met Zack on the set of Dawn of the Dead in 2003. Never could I imagine a cat so laid back and so cool would give us some very interesting films. I was doing an interview with him, and as a Dawn fan and very protective of the original, plus having read James Gunn script, I had some serious questions for him and in the end he eased my mind to an extent. I did a follow up interview with him in NJ 2 months before the release of Dawn of the Dead. Did I enjoy the final product... yes Do I care about running zombies? No, I find them more terrifying What many people don't know is ack was a very sought after commercial director and while working on Dawn he also directed a few commercials, in fact on commercial set, he filmed the light shot used in Dawn of the Dead.
